Missed The Futurity Finals by a half a point.
Mark found Olay in a backyard in Santa Rosa, but there was nothing ordinary about her. Bred from the renowned Docs Hickory line, Olay was a remarkable working cow horse with talent, speed, and heart. In 2002, as a two-and-a-half-year-old, she missed the Futurity Finals by just half a point—a testament to the promise and ability she carried even at a young age. By the time Mark met her, her competition days were behind her, and the woman who owned her, facing declining health, knew Olay needed a future where she would be safe, valued, and loved.
From the beginning, Olay stood out. She could cut a cow from the herd with precision, slide, spin on a dime, stop instantly, and move side to side with effortless focus on the bovine. Olay had only one gear, and that was fast. Yet for all her athletic brilliance, she also had her own unmistakable personality. She was a diva who did not like walking through puddles and getting her hooves wet—but if there was a bovine in sight, nothing else mattered.
Because of her quickness and skill, only a few students were able to ride Olay. She required an advanced rider, but to those who knew her, she was unforgettable. Mark misses her every day. She was one of the great horses, and her story remains a powerful reminder of the strength, spirit, and brilliance that make a horse truly exceptional. .
